What is Paediatric Surgery?
Paediatric surgery is the diagnosis and treatment (operative and non operative) of premature babies to adolescents who may require surgery. It includes chest surgery, general paediatric surgery like hernias, tumour surgery, urology, traumatic injuries and the management of congenital abnormalities both ante-natally and in the neonatal period.
If your child has an illness, injury, or disease that may require surgery, a paediatric surgeon has the experience and qualifications to treat your child. Not all children seen by a paediatric surgeon will need an operation and they are in the best position to decide when not to operate too.
Children are not just small adults. They cannot always say what is bothering them. They cannot always answer medical questions, and are not always able to be patient and helpful during a medical examination. Paediatric surgeons know how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them relaxed and cooperative. In addition, paediatric surgeons use equipment and facilities specifically designed for children. Their surgical offices are arranged and decorated with children in mind. This includes the examination rooms and waiting rooms which may have toys, videos, and reading materials for children. This helps create a comfortable and nonthreatening environment for your child.
Udaya Samarakkody has the widest range of treatment options, the most extensive and complete training and the greatest expertise in dealing with children and in treating surgical disorders. She is specialised in paediatric urology which involves treating congenital urological problems and surgical problems related to genital organs.
